The objective of this editorial is not to suggest a roadmap for the future, but to try and identify the areas of concern in the domain of higher education which deserve immediate attention from the authorities. Higher education is no longer elitist, much less a luxury, but has become more accessible and is, moreover, essential for survival in today’s world. Hence, higher educational institutions and universities have to be centres for entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity, scholarships and knowledge production. Universities should be a platform to breed knowledgeable citizens with cultural and ethical values imprinted in them.Full Text

The central concern of this note is to examine the performance of Indian higher educational institutions (HEIs) with emphasis on state universities and to identify key sectors in education, governance and ethical domains that are key to the transformation of our higher education. As higher education has been evolving, the expectations of stakeholders are also changing and, therefore, diagnostic tools and benchmarks for institutions also need to be dynamic and innovative. Readers may note that some of the comments made here are applicable to the state universities, and not all HEIs.Full Text
